So, it's been awhile now that I've had a strong desire to return to the Canyon and hike it's depth. I blame a part of this longing on briefly viewing it at age 11 just before we moved out of Arizona...the rest I blame on the book "Through Painted Deserts" by Donald Miller. Also, I love hiking trails. With these tiny combinations, and a sincere fascination and eagerness to get back there, I've begun my research for the trip.
I'd really like to take a backcountry route off the South Rim in September. I want to backpack and stay overnight in the canyon, taking a few days for the whole adventure. I've never done this before, but MOST of the people who get out there haven't, at least, that's what I've read on the national parks website. Idealy I'd like to take one trail in and a different trail out, I believe starting at the Bright Angel trail will lead one to do that. There's more investigating to do, and the earliest I can apply for a permit for the overnight hiking in September, is May 1.
I'm not taking this trip alone, although it would be amazing in solitude, since it's my first time I really think it's unwise to do it by myself. So...if any of this interests you and you think you'd be in for it, let me know. There's plenty of time to decide, but April will be the latest I take bids. ;) A group no larger then six would be optimal, but I'd be pleased with two others to join me. This isn't a first come first serve basis, though. We'll talk details if I get any interest.
In the meantime, I'll be in CT trying not to drool excessively in anticipation.
